S33P4 – The fruit of trust in God: assurance

Psa. 91:7‭-‬8
A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but danger will not come near you. You will only look on with your eyes and witness the repayment of the wicked.

The events of the old testament Passover celebrated to this day may seem frightening. As an exercise of his judgment on Egypt, God sent a plague into the land. This plague was to kill every firstborn of both people and animals. The issue was that God’s own chosen people also resided in this land. His solution was to instruct them to cover the doorframes of their homes with a certain kind of blood. As God sent the plague throughout the land, it would pass over the homes marked with blood. Specifically, God said that He would pass over the homes if He saw the blood on the doorframes. This was no type of magical forcefield that protected the building. The blood was simply a visual indication to God that those who lived in the home are his and should be spared. It is by this same method that the blood of Jesus Christ guarantees that we are spared.

The picture of Passover painted in the old testament is a clear allusion to what awaits us at the return of Jesus Christ. He will return to exact judgment on the wicked. This is no veiled threat to get people to shape up and be a little better. This is our very real future. Those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior are covered in his blood. We may not be able to see the blood, but God can see it. This blood is the indicator that we are to be passed over at the time of judgment. Today’s scripture tells us what this will look like. We are not to fear if we see the multitudes dropping at our feet. We are to be secure in our covering and know that God’s judgment will pass over us. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that makes it possible for us to stand firmly and confidently during this time of judgment, and our role at that time will be only as spectators assured of salvation.

Many believe that the Bible is nothing more been a compilation a fictional tales designed to teach us life lessons and some measure of morality. This cannot be further from the truth. In fact, the Bible contains a letter from God to us. He speaks to us through its words and gives us insight into our spiritual existence and what is to come. When the day of judgement is upon us, we should not be surprised. We should expect to see a day that measures up to what God has shown us in his word. But in the midst of the death and the terror that will strike many at that time, we will be in a place of safety. We will feel and project the assurance that we receive from being covered in the blood of Jesus Christ. Father, thank You that You have made a way for your judgment to pass over us, and let us remain confident of this blessed assurance.
