S58P1 – This precious light: the source
Psa. 36:7-9
How precious is thy lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge under the shadow of thy wings. They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou wilt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. For with thee is the fountain of life: In thy light shall we see light.
He was no stranger to the darkness of this world. He had known plenty of pain and heartache in his life, and he was searching for peace and light. He would close his eyes and try to concentrate on that which was inside of him, and he expected that he would find what he was looking for there. He was nothing if not persistent, but that persistence would not pay off. His life did not get brighter, and his pain was not relieved. He did not know enough to realize that he was searching for light in a very dark place. The light of life was something that he could have, but it was not something that would come from him.
Being born into sin means that we are born into darkness. We have no light of our own of which to speak. If we are to find light in this world, we must look outside ourselves. Humankind is not the source. It is God who possesses the light of life and who allows us to see and experience it. Those who search for this light within themselves will only be disappointed. It is not something that we have but something that we must find and tap into. We must go straight to the source. It is only through God’s light that we can see light, and David recognized this. No other light can chase away the darkness that fills this world. Our Father must illuminate the truth in order for us to receive it.
There is hope for all things if we only know where to search. Some remain in darkness because they prefer to stay there. They want their hearts and their deeds to be hidden, and they have no desire to change. Others remain in darkness because they think that they will find the light somewhere outside of God. This is a fruitless search. The light of life can only come from the one who has the power and authority to create it. What a good Father we have who has illuminated our lives with his light. Father, thank You for exposing that which was hidden in darkness, and make us people who desire to remain in your light.
