S75P6 – A tour through Matthew 24: the King appears in power
Matt. 24:29-30
Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
The soldiers and their chief commanders were a formidable group of men. They raided the village and easily took what they wanted. Those who were not willing to submit to their authority were beaten into submission or worse. They quickly began instituting a new rule of law, a display of power and might which the villagers never had witnessed before then. They felt as powerless against this army as they would feel against the waves of the ocean or the winds of the air. One day, the king and his footmen rode into the village to make sure things were in order. Every member of the army bowed to that king, and it put the strength and might of those men into perspective. Even that great army had to submit to a higher power.
The first time Jesus came to Earth it was in the form of the most lowly. He was not only a helpless child, but He was a poor one at that. The king the people expected to be their Messiah did not arrive with an army or a sword. Although Jesus had all power available to him, it was not evident based on his appearance. When Christ returns, however, his power will be on full display. He is so awesome and mighty that even the great powers of the heavens must bow to him. The stars in all their fiery glory will go out. The sun and the moon will shrink in darkness. A power we never could imagine will be here, and that will be just the beginning of Christ’s appearance. Imagine the arrival of a God so glorious that the awe-inspiring heavenly bodies will be put out by the magnitude of his great glory.
When we read the scriptures, we see how powerful and glorious the Lord is. Even in our days we have heard testimony of his greatness and have seen him work. For thousands of years He has moved and shown his might and made men pause in wonder. All of this, however, has been only the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more for us to see of our Lord, and we will see it all one day. The Lord will have his day and receive his due. Those who have not believed will have to believe. Those who love him will glory in his glory, and the full measure of his awesome power will be on display eternally. Father, thank You that we have such incredible things to look forward to, and that we will experience the Godhead in unimaginable glory and power one day and forever.
