S129P7 – The signs of the righteous: above worry
Mt. 6:31-34
Therefore do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Before my baptism, I attended a class for new belivers designed to explain about 10 or 12 fundamental Christian principals. Of course, salvation and the purpose behind baptism were covered in the study. Another topic covered was tithing. This portion of the class sticks out in my mind because of what one of my classmates said. She was explaining why she could not afford to tithe. Her budget was too tight, and there was nothing left at the end of the month to give to the church. She only had enough to support her own household. It was the classic perspective of one who believes that she is supporting herself and not that God is the one providing for her needs.
It makes sense that the Pagans or Gentiles worry about what they will have but that those seeking righteousness do not. Those who worry about their provision have elected to rely on themsleves for it. Their worry comes from the simple fact that they are limited. No matter how competent or successful or wealthy, anyone can fall from a high perch. When we rely on ourselves, there always is the possibility of a let-down. However, those who trust in the Lord for provision have placed their hopes in an unlimited supply. God does not let us down. He does not run out, does not make unwise decisions, and does not show up late. Relying on God means signing up for the sure thing. He will come through for us in every situation.
The woman who did not have enough money to tithe simply did not understand that God could do more with 90% of her income than she could do with 100% of it. She did not understand the spiritual breakthrough that happens when we stretch ourselves beyond our abilities and allow God to display his. Fear and worry kept her hanging on to control even though her way meant that she was barely making it. The righteous will follow God’s commands and live according to his standard without worry because they know his ways have purpose. Father, teach us to live wisely yet freely, trusting that You are in control of that which would cause us worry.
